Man Wanted On Statutory Rape Charges In Mississippi Is Arrested In Lawrenceburg

A man wanted on statutory rape charges in the State of Mississippi was arrested by Lawrenceburg authorities Sunday night.

Reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department show that an officer on patrol noticed a Jeep parked at Hope Springs Park on Old Waynesboro Highway, at around 9:40 p.m. He said that he approached and found that a man and woman were sleeping in a tent beside the vehicle.

The officer informed them that it was a city park and that use is not allowed after dark. They explained to him that they were from Arkansas and were trying to move to the area.

While speaking with the couple, the officer noted that the man began to act in a suspicious manner and appeared to be extremely nervous. Because of his actions he asked for their identification and conducted a pat down to ensure they had no weapons.

They granted permission for a search of their vehicle and the officer reports finding around two grams of marijuana concealed inside a deodorant container inside. The man claimed ownership of the contraband.

When checking their identifications against the National Crime Information Center, the officer learned that there was an outstanding warrant against the man. He was wanted in Mississippi on charges of statutory rape.

William Jackson Burris, III, age 31, of 3705 Nicholas Lane, Delaware, Arkansas was arrested on charges of being a fugitive from justice and simple possession of marijuana. He was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center where he was held without bond to await extradition to Mississippi.
